8 Fall Home Improvement Ideas to Bring in the New Season

Tilghman Builders Team
By Tilghman Builders Team - September 18, 2023

Cooler weather and changing leaves? Yes, please!

Fall is here in Bucks County and Montgomery County, and we couldn’t be more excited. A new season is the perfect time to think about potential home updates and make sure your house is ready for the soon-to-be chill in the air and, eventually, winter.

Here are eight of our top fall home improvement projects to consider this year, plus fall color palette ideas we know you’ll love.

Exterior Home Improvement Ideas for Fall

1. Clean, Clean, Clean

A good cleaning can go a long way in giving your home exterior a refresh for the fall season. Power washing your home, cleaning out the gutters, and cleaning your windows alone can make your house look brand new. This is also a good time to replace any broken siding and other exterior damage.Clean (Stock Image)

2. Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

A fresh paint job can also give your home the lift it deserves if a little more TLC is required. This not only goes for your exterior walls but for your doors and shutters as well.

Painting your front door, in particular, can give your home a completely new look. Choosing a new color (more on that later) that pops against a neutral siding sends an inviting message for trick-or-treaters and other guests you will have over in the coming months.Fresh Paint (Stock Image)

3. Touch Up Your Landscaping

What good is doing exterior updates to your home if it’s overshadowed by overgrown weeds and bushes? Neat landscaping provides the perfect setting for your home, no matter the time of year. Trimmed hedges, attractive walkways, and seasonal flowers are all great ways to enhance your home’s curb appeal.Enhance Curb Appeal (TB Portfolio)

4. Inspect Your Deck or Patio

Something that is often overlooked when autumn rolls around is the patio and deck area. Since cooler weather typically does not allow for much congregating outside — at least in Pennsylvania —  these spaces are often forgotten until spring.

However, it’s best to take the time and pack up your outdoor furniture and cushions for the changing seasons ahead. It’s also imperative that you check your outdoor spaces for damages, cracks, rotted wood, and the like at this time of year.Inspect Deck (TB Portfolio)

Once winter sets in, the chilly weather will only make damages to your deck or patio worse, requiring more advanced repairs than originally needed.

5. Incorporate Energy-Efficient Updates

You not only want your home to look good but it needs to function well also. Updating the following areas will ensure you are not wasting energy (and money) with your utilities:

  • Insulation
  • Windows
  • Roof
  • HVAC

Proper insulation, a sound roof, updated and maintained windows, and a high-functioning HVAC system can keep your home heated efficiently when the temperatures drop this fall and winter.Energy Efficiency (TB Portfolio)

6. Fall Kitchen Updates

With the holiday season coming up, fall is a great time of year to update your kitchen. Cooking, baking, and gathering will be in full swing soon, and your kitchen may just need a few updates or a complete remodel to keep up. Consider the following areas to get started:

  • Appliances: Appliances are typically the first place people start with a kitchen update. Stainless steel remains the most popular appliance choice, giving kitchens a refined look that goes with almost any style. You may want to consider upgrading to a larger fridge or double Dutch ovens if you are regularly juggling multiple dishes.
  • Eat-in kitchen: Perhaps an appliance swap just won’t cut it this autumn. Eat-in kitchens are wonderful for entertaining and large gatherings, and their open layout allows for easy maneuvering while you cook those delicious fall and holiday recipes.
  • Lighting: If your kitchen doesn’t have plenty of natural light, recessed lighting throughout is a great touch, especially with dimmers. Pendant lighting provides a bold statement over a bar or island. If you’d really like to go the extra mile, consider installing under-the-counter lights for a subtle glow when those midnight snack cravings hit.
  • Updated hardware: You may want to consider replacing your kitchen’s hardware for a quick but effective update. Hardware updates are also great options for exploring new interior design styles. Using modern pulls on traditional cabinetry can give your kitchen a transitional style that can be further altered as you have the time and budget to do so.
  • New finishes: Swapping out finishes such as countertops and backsplashes are larger projects, but they’re still a relatively simple update with an experienced contractor.

7. Finish Your Basement

Finishing your basement not only provides more living space for your family but also increases your home’s resale value. You can do so many things with a finished basement depending on your family’s needs, including adding an in-law suite, extra entertainment space, or a separate play area for kids.Finish Basement (TB Portfolio)

8. Add a Fireplace

There’s something about a fireplace that makes a room feel cozier. With cooler weather coming soon, it makes sense to add things to your home that add character and function. Most people are aware that fireplaces make great additions to living and family rooms, but they are also excellent for the dining room and bedroom as well.

The construction of a wood-burning fireplace doesn’t have to be your only option — the innovations of gas and decorative fireplaces make it possible to insert one nearly anywhere.Add Fireplace (Stock image)
