This kitchen renovation transformed a compartmentalized 100-year-old home into a bright, open, and highly functional living space while carefully preserving the character that made the home special. Before the renovation, the kitchen and a secondary dining room divided the rear of the home into smaller disconnected spaces, creating poor flow and limiting functionality for modern family living.
To completely reimagine the layout, we removed the original back wall of the house and installed a massive structural steel beam spanning the entire opening. This was one of the most technically challenging aspects of the renovation, requiring careful planning, engineering, and precision execution. The homeowners were understandably nervous about whether such a major structural change was even possible, but trusted our team throughout the process. Although installing the beam felt like threading a needle within the tight constraints of the existing home, our team successfully and safely completed the installation, completely transforming the first-floor layout.
The new open-concept kitchen now flows seamlessly into the surrounding living spaces, dramatically improving sightlines, natural light, and functionality. To accommodate the new design, we also closed in an existing window and carefully patched the exterior brickwork so the transition looked original to the home.
Throughout the renovation, we balanced modern functionality with the warmth and charm expected in a historic home. Thoughtful finishes, clean lines, and intentional details helped create a kitchen that feels both timeless and highly functional for everyday life. This project showcases how expert planning, structural experience, and craftsmanship can completely reinvent an older home without losing its character.
